The Yankees got off to an inauspicious start with a couple of lazy defensive plays that led to Houston’s lone run but DJ LaMahieu erased it with a solo homer to begin the bottom of the first and Aaron Hicks put the cherry on top with a three-run homer off the foul pole in right

James Paxton went six and came through for us like we believed he would. He gave up just four hits all night and did well to pitch around four walks. He struck out nine.

Verlander got through seven for the Astros and Brad Peacock debuted in this year’s postseason with a scoreless eighth.

Tommy Kahnle, Zack Britton, and Aroldis Chapman combined for the last nine outs. Britton and Chapman got the last eight outs of the game without allowing a batter to reach base.

Houston Astros

So it’s back to Houston for Game 6 and, potentially, seven but with no scheduled travel day.

The Astros benefited from Game 4 getting washed away and postponed a day. They got to start Greinke again and won Game 4 to go up, 3–1. They did not completely avoid the bullpen match with the Yankees.

Gerrit Cole has had only three days of rest because Game 6 will be played without a travel day prior. That means the rookie, Jose Urquidy, will start Game 6, like he was scheduled to do in Game 4.

It’s a decision AJ Hinch can make because of the Astros’ 3–2 lead. Would he be getting Cole the extra day and handing the ball to a rookie if his side were facing elimination? I find that hard to believe.

It’s the right move. The rookie will be much more comfortable at home and pitching with a series lead. Worst case scenario, the Yankees force Game 7 on Sunday night against a rested Gerrit Cole.

Thats what I believe will happen. Even if Urquidy limits runs, he won’t last long and Houston’s bullpen is at a distinct disadvantage. I’ve been betting the under, and cashing the under, all series long but this is the first game I have a higher total than the ‘books do.

It sure was big of Verlander to buckle down and get through his seven on Friday, though. Houston’s bullpen does come into this one relatively well-rested.

And they force it by getting the bats hot. Hicks’ homer in Game 5 is a great sign. If the Yankees can get something from Gary Sanchez or Edwin Encarnacion, things will be interesting ahead of a Game 7 against the hottest pitcher in the game who isn’t necessarily known as a big game pitcher.

I’ve got the Yankees scoring at least five or six runs in this game and Houston doing the rest to push this thing over. There’s just no reason for this total to be below eight.
