Today we have an east vs west matchup as the Vancouver Canucks travel to Detroit to take on the Red Wings. This should be an interesting matchup between two mid-table teams.

Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks have started this season off with some promise. Off-season acquisition JT Miller has been productive for them and is currently tied for #1 in scoring.

They won their last game and have a winning record on the season. They come into this one fresh, with their last game coming on Sunday, a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

Jacob Markstrom returned for their last match against the Rangers and was very impressive. He has been a consistently good starter for the Canucks and I see another good performance out of him in this contest.

Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings have been a polarizing team this year. Their top line has been a juggernaut, but the rest of their team can’t seem to get much done.

In the paint, Jonathan Bernier and Jimmy Howard have offered them average goaltending at best. It’s hard to win in the NHL when you aren’t getting good goaltending. It’s even harder to win when you combine that with an inability to score.

The Red Wings are 1-2 at home so far, and I don’t see home ice as a big advantage in the NHL. The Red Wings need to come out of the gates hungry if they want to stay in this one.
