This is being written in advance of game three which could put the desperation level to DEFCON 5 if Houston in down 3-0. If it is just 2-1 there could be a big difference.

Houston Astros

The key lever for this one is the result of game three. If they lose their best-laid plans are out the window.

Prior to the series starting it was assumed they would start rookie Jose Urquidy. He had made quality starts for them down the stretch but are they really going to put it all on him in a potential elimination game? He has not started a game in the playoffs.

If not Uquidy than it will fall to Gerrit Cole, who was brilliant until he wasn’t. He picked a poor time to have his worst start since May. He might just be tired.

The Nats are pitching well but at the same time the Nats need to hit better. Washington does not have a great bullpen but so far those guys are beating the Astros hitters.

On the road, I will be looking for guys like Jose Altuve and George Springer to set the tone and do some damage. Hopefully both.

Washington Nationals

Needless to say Washington is in a great spot right now. Whether they win or lose game three they are in a great position to capture their first world series crown.

Though it has not been announced it looks like they will go with Anibal Sanchez in this spot. He is no longer a “name” guy but he has been good for them all season long. He has been brilliant in limited playoff action too – 1 run in 12 innings.

There could be a little worry that some of the Houston bats have had success against Sanchez but he has been back in the NL awhile and they have not seen him in this series as of yet.

At the plate, the Nats have to be feeling great. Not only have they gained a series lead against the best starters in the game but they are all contributing. Every member of the starting lineup got on base in game two.

Juan Soto, one of the youngest players in the game is enjoying his closeup quite a bit.
